Gion Festival (祇園祭) is said to be one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. The others two are Tenjin Festival (天神祭) in Osaka and Sanno Festival (山王祭) in Tokyo. Though I had lived in Tokyo for two years, I was not fortunate enough to witness the Sanno Festival there. Gion Festival is celebrated annually during the entire month of July. Parade of yamaboko floats (山鉾巡行) to Yasaka Shine (八坂神社) on 17 July is one of the main events of the festival. I have chance to go to Kyoto in this July but unfortunately it was not on the 17th day of the month. So I could not see the parade te.
