Have you ever tried fried spider, a local delicacy of Skun town? These large ground-dwelling spiders are species of tarantula, called A-Ping (អាពីង រពីង) in Khmer. In early 2009, it was in the top 5 best street eats in Asia.
If you have not tried it, you should. It may look disgusting, but you can’t judge a book by its cover. Its taste is much better than its look. Have never been to or stopped over at Skun town? No worry. Though Skun is the main produce market, normally you can also find this fried spider at river quay in front of Royal Palace and at some markets in Phnom Penh as well.

I have never try the spiders but have to some day 🙂
Thank for dropping by, Magnus. Are you still living in Cambodia?
Oh yes! it is awesome. I was scare at first but after finished one leg of that spider I needed more. Cricket at there is awesome as well, bro!
scary or yummy?
i’ve never tried.
perhaps i guess scary 😀
It neither yummy or scary for me. Just an edible bug. I find cricket is more palatable. 😀
Yummy. I tried a couple times, but not anymore…………
why not? if it’s yummy?
I like spider but the fresh cooked one. However, there is a concern about the distinct of spider particularlyin Kompong Province. I will not eat spider if the study shows that the wild spider is going to distinct in the future.
I think you meant extinction of the spider. I have never heard of that, but if it is true, the government has to take measures to protect it from extinction. Of course our people should have good morals like you.
we call អាពីង but we write រពីង
Thank for the correction, Vichetr. I have just checked dictionary. It is as what you said. I have updated it.
If the test like you said, I Will try it on once day ! 🙂
Not a bad idea to test it at least one in your life time 😉
