Tum Ar Primary School probably is the most remote school I have ever visited. Located about 110 km from Kampong Thom provincial town in Sandan District in deep jungle, it takes about 3 hours by car.

Currently 118 children are doing their studies there with only one teacher who is also the school master. You may wonder how come a teacher can teach three classes. The teacher teaches in two shifts, morning and afternoon with one combined class. For example, he teaches Grade 1 in the morning shift and Grade 2 and Grade 3 (combined class) in the afternoon shift. Actually the children there hardly received proper education. I was a little socked to hear that students in grade 3 hardly read children picture books.

Tum Ar is one school supported by SVA in 2007. The school compound was moved to larger location right inside jungle; and now is still under the process of clearing and removing tree trunks. Now there is a new concrete three-classroom building, but with only one teacher. Next year, District Educational Office will send one more teacher to the school. With three classroom and enough teachers, in the future the school can be a complete school operating Grade 1 to 6.

However, I am so sad to see trees in the forest are being cut and burned down for farming. Nearby the school there is a huge rubber plantation where it used to be jungle.

En route to the school we had to take oxcart road as the main road was under construction.
